Meeting, Saturday 21 June 2025.

Hi Everybody,

This Saturday is the June monthly club meeting.

Time:   10am.
Venue:  Woodend RSL Hall, Woodend.

AI comes to amateur radio

FreeDV is a suite of digital voice modes for HF radio. Digital voice over HF provides the benefit of a clear signal with no background noise while taking less bandwidth than a sideband signal. Until last year, the speech codec used was the world leading codec2 designed by David, VK5DGR. A new, Version 2, of the software has just been released that uses AI Machine Learning techniques to encode speech and transmit over an imperfect HF radio channel. This is called the Radio Autoencoder or RADE.

The machine learning model has taught itself to get a high quality signal over a poor link and another model produces a more realistic voice than ever before.

One of our members, Peter VK3TPM, is a member of the six person international project leadership team.

He will talk about the project, the revolutionary improvements that AI is bringing and demonstrate it.
After the meeting some members have lunch at one of the local cafes. All are welcome to join in.

Regards,
Graeme VK3NE,
Secretary, MRARC.
